一般將來時用法：
“will / shall+v.”與“be going to+v.” 。兩者均可表示將來時間和意圖，兩者有時可換用，有時不可換用。不可換用的情況主要是：若強調某個意圖是經過事先考慮好的，用be going to;若表示某個意圖沒有經過事先考慮，而是在說話的當時才臨時想到的，則用will 。比較：
“Mary is in hospital.” “Oh, really? I didn’t know. I’ll go and visit her.” “瑪麗住院了。”“啊，真的嗎?我還不知道。我要去看看她。” (臨時想法，不能用be going to)
“Mary is in hospital.” “Yes, I know. I’m going to visit her tomorrow.” “瑪麗住院了。”“我知道，我打算明天去看看她。” (事先考慮的意圖，不能用will)
另外，若指跡象表明要發生某事，用be going to 而不用will 。如：
Look at those black clouds. It’s going to rain. 看那些烏云，要下雨了。
一般現在時用法：
■一般現在時表示客觀存在及普遍真理。如：
Summer follows spring. 春天之后是夏天。
The sun rises in the east. 太陽從東方升起。
注意：此種用法即使出現在過去的語境中，仍用一般現在時。如：
I learned that the earth goes around the sun when I was in primary school. 我在小學就學過地球是圍繞太陽轉的。
■一般現在時表示格言或警句。如：
Pride goes before a fall. 驕者必敗。
一般過去時用法：
■在過去一段時間內的經常性或習慣性動作。如：
We often played together when we were children. 我們小時候常在一起玩。
注：表示過去經常發生的動作還可用used to 和would 。如：
He used to smoke a lot, but he doesn’t now. 他過去經常抽煙，但現在不抽了。
Whenever we were in trouble, he would help us. 每當我們遇到困難，他都會幫助我們。
■表示主語過去的特征或性格。如：
At that time she was very good at English. 那時她英語學得很好。
