拉丁字母(Latin alphabet) ， 又稱羅馬字母(Roman alphabet) ， 是英語的26個字母的來源及西方大多數國家文字的基本組成元素 ， 也是我們漢語拼音使用的字母 。那么這26個拉丁字母是怎么演變而來的呢？
其實 ， 這些拉丁字母如同我們的漢字一樣也是起源于象形文字 。公元前2000-前800年間 ， 海上貿易十分繁榮的腓尼基人（古代活躍在地中海東岸） ， 以埃及象形文字（圣書體）為基礎 ， 創造了腓尼基語的字母表（古迦南-古希伯來字母） 。比如A（倒著的A）是從象形文字牛演變而來 ，  X是象形文字魚的變體 。
不過 ， 也有可能是希伯來人最先創造的 ， 因為希伯來人被迦南人戰敗后曾前往埃及并在那里寄居過300年時間 。但不管誰更早 ， 希伯來語與腓尼基語十分相似 。后來 ， 腓尼基亞人對祖先的30個符號加以歸納整理 ， 合并為22個簡略的形體 。
