呂彥直(1894~1929),中國近代建筑師的杰出代表 。字仲直仲甫先生是誰、古愚，安徽省滁縣人 。生于天津，少年喪父，曾隨姐僑居法國巴黎數年 。1911年入清華學堂讀書 。1913年赴美國康奈爾大學，先學電學，旋即改學建筑學，1917年畢業，在美國實習，師從美因著名建筑師墨菲 。曾參與南京金陵女子大學和北京燕京大學校舍的設計 。1921年回國創辦彥記建筑師事務所 。1926年又在廣州中山紀念堂和中山紀念碑設計競賽中獲第一名 。

1925年9月27日，孫中山先生葬事籌備處第十二次會議決定，陵墓采用呂彥直設計的方案，并聘請呂彥直為陵墓建筑師 。
為了確保工程質量，呂彥直從選料到監工絲不茍 。1929年3月18日，呂彥直因積勞成疾，患腸癌在上海不幸病逝，年僅36歲，未能看到6月1日舉行的中山先生奉安大典 。但他以設計并主持建造南京中山陵奠定了他在中國建筑史上的地位 。他實際上就是為中山陵而生，也是為中山陵而死的 。同年6月11日，南京國民政府向全國發布第472號褒揚令，全文如下:
總理葬事籌備處建筑師呂彥直，學識優良，勇于任事 。此次籌建總理陵墓計畫圖圖樣，昕夕勤勞，適屆工程甫竣之時，遽爾病逝 。眷念勞勤，惋惜殊深，應予褒揚，并給營葬費二千元，以示優過 。此令 。
1930年，總理陵園管理委員會為表彰呂彥直的貢獻，又為他立碑，石碑上半部為昌彥直半身遺像(由捷克雕塑家高祺創作)，下半部為于右任書寫的碑文 。文日:“總理陵墓建筑師呂彥直監理陵工積勞病故，總理陵園管理委員會于十九年五月二十八日議決，立石紀念 ?！笔卜庞谥猩搅昙捞梦髂辖堑男菹⑹覂?，抗戰中不知去向 。
